The music world mourns the loss of Irv Gotti, born Irving Domingo Lorenzo Jr., who passed away on February 5, 2025, at the age of 54. As the co-founder of Murder Inc. Records, Gotti was instrumental in shaping the hip-hop and R&B landscape of the late 1990s and early 2000s. His contributions to the industry have left an indelible mark, influencing countless artists and fans alike.

Gotti’s journey in music began in the Hollis neighborhood of Queens, New York City, where he was born on June 26, 1970. He emerged in the 1990s, working with Def Jam and playing a pivotal role in launching the careers of Jay-Z and DMX. In 1998, alongside his brother Chris, he established Murder Inc. Records, an imprint of Def Jam Recordings. The label quickly rose to prominence with the release of Ja Rule’s debut album, “Venni Vetti Vecci,” in 1999. Gotti’s production prowess was evident in chart-topping hits like “Always On Time” by Ja Rule and Ashanti, “Foolish” by Ashanti, and “What’s Luv?” by Fat Joe featuring Ashanti.
