Well, isn’t this just delightful? The United States and Russia have apparently decided that the best way to end the war in Ukraine is to not, you know, involve Ukraine at all. Because who really needs the input of the country that’s been fighting a brutal war for years now, right? Why bother with pesky details like sovereignty or democracy when the world’s two superpowers can have a cozy chat, sipping coffee and making decisions about the fate of a nation? A true display of international diplomacy, if you ask me.
At this point, it’s almost laughable how much the rest of the world has been sidelined in this grand drama. The U.S. and Russia—two countries that have shown little regard for the well-being of Ukraine for the past few years—have apparently decided to take matters into their own hands. After all, who could possibly understand the intricacies of a war in Ukraine better than the powers who have played a direct role in stoking the flames? Surely, the people of Ukraine have no real stake in the matter.
It’s not like their cities are being destroyed, their families torn apart, or their lives irrevocably changed. No, that’s just a trivial concern for those living on the front lines. What really matters here is what the U.S. and Russia think is best, right? After all, they’re the ones who have the power, so why not just make the call and let everyone else get in line?
The fact that Ukraine might have, I don’t know, a few thoughts on the matter? Well, that’s just a minor inconvenience. Surely, their government doesn’t need to be part of the conversation. What do they know about their own future, anyway? Let’s just leave it to the two big powers to negotiate on behalf of the people they’re supposedly protecting—who needs a seat at the table when you’re just a pawn in someone else’s game?
And let’s not overlook the sheer irony here. The U.S., a nation that prides itself on spreading democracy and self-determination around the globe, is now skipping the step where it actually involves the people it’s supposedly defending. Nothing screams “freedom” like dictating terms from a distance. As for Russia, well, who’s really surprised? This is the same country that invaded Ukraine in the first place and now finds itself in a position to determine Ukraine’s fate, without the inconvenience of consulting the nation directly. It’s almost poetic in its audacity.
But don’t worry, Ukraine’s leaders are totally on board with being excluded from the process, right? They’re probably thrilled to sit back and let Washington and Moscow sort it all out for them. After all, who better than the very countries responsible for fueling the war to decide when it’s time for it to end?
The fact that Ukraine is being left out of the conversation, just goes to show how seriously the world’s superpowers take the concept of sovereignty, right? So, let’s all raise a glass to U.S.-Russia negotiations, the pinnacle of democracy in action—where the people directly impacted by a conflict are, naturally, the last ones to know what’s going on.
If this doesn’t make you question the integrity of international diplomacy, I don’t know what will. But hey, at least it’s all for the greater good… right?
